Ancient Greece
Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. [Archimedes]…

Welcome to this RPG forum based mainly in the period of Greek history lasting from the Greek Dark Ages ca. 1100 BC and the Dorian invasion, to 146 BC and the Roman conquest of Greece after the battle of Corinth. It is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of Western civilization. Greek culture had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of Europe. The civilization of the ancient Greeks has been immensely influential on the language, politics, educational systems, philosophy, science, and arts, giving rise to the Renaissance in Western Europe and again resurgent during various neo-Classical revivals in 18th and 19th century Europe and the Americas. The time for the Greek Myths to come alive!

 Songs of nature // Alcinoe
« Thread Started on Sept 13, 2008, 7:56pm »

The sun was shining bright and the fresh wind caressed the green leaves of the trees making a morning song at the moment. This woke up Erato who had had trouble sleeping the night before. But she was not angry nor sad, she simply could find no rest and perhaps Morpheus was not there to help. Not that she minded, she could always use a walk in the wild.

She stood up and went to take a warm bath with scented flower leaves and oils, just as she used to almost every day, though sometimes she had things to do that required speed and so she could not enjoy her morning fully. Either way, she finished sooner than most mornings and after drinking a glass of water she decided to go for a walk in the gardens of Athens.

It was said that the King had many daughters, which was rare for most Lords looked for an heir to the throne, either way this interested Erato quite a lot, especially the mention of the so called ‘mythic’ daughter he had had with the Goddess of Love. Though Erato had never spoken to Aphrodite about it she would rather find out herself.

And so, invisible to mortal eyes, the beautiful Muse of love, desire and poetry arrived at Athens and went for a walk before she found herself in the gardens of the Palace of the mighty city of Athens, devoted to Athena. She now had to wait for the Princesses to wake up and go for their daily walks along the flower beds and the singing of the gorgeous birds.

Athens was considered by many a blessed real which had been favoured by the gods in many ways. Some even thought they loved this quiet and beautiful land. But mortals always loved an feared beauty the way they loved and feared life. Since most mortals were exposed to actions that could awaken the rage or hate of the gods. That is the main reason Athens preserved her loyalty toward the gods to prevent ill from happening.

That might be the main reason the King always made sure his people always honoured and worshipped the gods as they deserved to be. But he also induced this to his wife and daughters. Though his wife always seemed arrogant and somewhat proud and this awoke a fear in the heart of her husband and daughter they never dared to show.

One afternoon, the King and his daughter went of a walk among the beauty and kindness of Gaia who had graced Ethiopia with delights and harmony. They walked in silence until they reached a beautiful waterfall that seemed to contain all the colours in the world, both smiled but it was cepheus who interrupted such silent contemplation and then said to his daughter, "I have to say you make me proud everyday, my child, but never forget the place everything has in this life." He looked around them and then said motioning to nature and the animals that passed by, "from the trees and animals to the men and women who were blessed to live in these lands. but never forget that above all reside the will and might of the gods."

Andromeda smiled and then said, "indeed, my beloved father, I hold respect and awe at their glory, but is the world to always go round?" He turned to look at her a bit confused but then the whole world seemed to turn into colourful flowers and trees. She opened her eyes and smiled, she always enjoyed nature in a way she would fall asleep in the wild in the middle of reading a book. She sighed, hopefully her mother would not panic and send the whole army to look for her.

She stood up and slowly stretched her arms as she felt rested. She turned to look at the waterfall as the sun shone upon it and smiled, with such beauty she did not wish to go back into the castle and finish her daily chores.

'It must be hard to be a mortal Princess...' thought Erato while she noticed the young Princess enjoy herself in her own solitude. She looked at her for a moment in wonder, how could it be that such an important person would spend most of her time on her own, in the middle of the woods and simply contemplate things in silence.

Erato never minded doing that sometimes, but she normally expectewd a beautiful Princess like the one her eyes beheld now, to have constant dinning invitations from nobles, Lords, Kings, to have unconuntable marriage propositions from other men, of good fortune... and this Princess was lying on the grass content with her shameful spare time. This could not be.

She knew mortal women were expected to simply linger at home and give birth to children they have to bring up while the me worked, went for long walks and enjoyed their time with their driends, of either sex. Which wasn't really fair, and so she disliked it but could do nothing really, she was a Muse, one to inspire but not as powerful as any Olympian. zeus the least...

She then took form of a young maid, one of those in charge of the Castle's catering service so that she could simply talk to the Princess with no fear in stcaring the hell out of her for presenting herself as the goddess she truly was. She then looked into the eyes of the Princess and then said, as humble as possible, "Lady Alcinoe, why do you always come here in your spare time?... what could hold you from living the life of your other siblings?"

She then put another beautiful rose in her basket before she turned to smile at Alcinoe once more, maybe she could have mortal friends after all...

Alcinoe was lost in thought, in between considering what was expected of a young Athenian princess like herself and what her heart truly desired. Though women were well taught on how to be what they were born to be ignoring their deepest desires.

Of course, this never assured anyone when considering that some women would rebel against this dark path most had to follow. Alcione strongly believed that women, like men, also had to follow their own paths to fulfill themselves instead of being like most things to men 'possessions'.

that was one of the reasons she had not yet married. She wished to find someone she could actually marry and who would be sensitive enough to consider her a human being rather than something he had gained with money, power and dominion.

Whatever she was thinking, whilst enjoying the warm sun rays she was distracted by someone who seemed to have found her in her usual hiding place, which was most unusual. She stretched her arms and then turned to look at the woman who had spoken to her and yet she could not recognize the face, maybe she was a new maid in the Palace.

"Lady Alcinoe, why do you always come here in your spare time?... what could hold you from living the life of your other siblings?"

She leaned her back gently against the tree whose shade she welcomed openly. then she said plainly, "My siblings possess a charm of their own bearable for men and women who live a mortal life. Unlike me..." She then looked back at the maid and proceeded, "I have a gift which is rather seen like a curse... my beauty could punish those I love."

She smiled at her and then looked up at the tree the Princess seemed to enjoy so much. She then placed her basket’s handle on her right arm and lifting a bit the edge of her dress she climbed up the tree making sure to sit down on a strong log just below the Athenian Princess.

She then leaned her back against the rough trunk and began to make a crown of the flowers she had picked up just before. There was silence for a moment but the sight was so beautiful, she really enjoyed it. And maybe sometimes silence was far better than excessive words.

She then said, “how can a Princess of such beauty consider herself miserable among women when surely your mother graced you with the most sweet of all gifts… such as beauty?”
